Black Stars Crisis: Minority Demands Full Reset of Ghana Football, Not Just Queiroz Sack

The Minority in Parliament has called for a comprehensive reset of Ghana football, arguing that the Black Stars' latest crisis goes beyond the position of head coach Carlos Queiroz.

In a press statement issued on September 30 and signed by the Ranking Member of Parliament's Youth and Sports Committee, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Minority said Ghana's poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign exposes deeper structural and administrative problems within the country's football system.

Ghana bottom of Group C

The Black Stars have suffered defeats in both of their opening Group C matches.

Ghana began the campaign with a 2-0 loss to Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering an even more damaging defeat at home against The Gambia.

The Black Stars raced into a 2-0 lead at the Accra Sports Stadium but conceded four unanswered goals to lose 4-2.

The results leave Ghana bottom of the group without a point.

The Minority also pointed to Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, noting that the Black Stars completed that qualifying campaign without recording a victory.

Ghana have now gone eight consecutive AFCON qualifying matches without a win, with their last victory coming against the Central African Republic in September 2023.

‘Don't blame only Queiroz’

While criticism has intensified around current head coach Carlos Queiroz following the latest results, the Minority said changing coaches alone would not address the underlying problems.

The group argued that Ghana's difficulties predate the Portuguese coach's appointment and warned against treating the situation as solely a technical-team failure.

“Changing coaches without examining the structures within which successive technical teams operate risks repeating the same cycle,” the Minority said.

The statement therefore calls for scrutiny of the broader football administration rather than focusing exclusively on the coach.

Minority demands independent audit

The Minority has outlined several areas it believes require urgent examination.

It is calling for:

  1. An independent technical and administrative audit of the Black Stars and the structures supporting Ghana's national teams.
  2. A review of GFA governance and accountability, including how technical appointments are made and how their performance is assessed.
  3. A transparent review of player selection, with selections assessed against sporting criteria including merit, current form and tactical requirements.
  4. Answers on key areas of national-team management, including player selection, technical planning, scouting, preparation, expenditure, youth development and Ghana's long-term football strategy.

The Minority said the review should extend across the country's football administration architecture.

Ministry and GFA also under scrutiny

The parliamentary group said accountability should not stop with the national-team technical staff.

It called for scrutiny of the Ghana Football Association, the technical management of the national teams and the oversight responsibilities of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The demand comes amid growing public frustration over the Black Stars' performances and wider questions about how Ghana's national teams are managed.

The latest calls also add to an increasingly broad debate over the future direction of Ghana football, with stakeholders divided over whether the immediate response should focus on changing the coach, restructuring the GFA or undertaking a more extensive review of the entire system.

For the Minority, the priority is a broader examination of the structures behind the Black Stars rather than another coaching change in isolation.
