Dr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu Outlines Chief of Staff Role, Calls for NPP unity ahead of 2028 Elections
Former Majority Leader and newly appointed Chief of Staff to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Dr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has shed light on his new role, the future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the importance of party unity ahead of the 2028 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Baah on Kyzz FM, Dr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s victory during the NPP flagbearer ship race was based on extensive interactions with Members of Parliament and grassroots party members. He recalled predicting in 2023 that Dr. Bawumia would secure about 70% of the votes, a forecast that came close to the actual result of 68%.
Explaining his appointment as Chief of Staff, Dr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said his role is to coordinate the activities of various departments and appointees responsible for finance, policy, and other key areas.
“I serve as a shield and coordinator for the office, ensuring that responsibilities are carried out efficiently and that the work of Dr. Bawumia runs smoothly,” he explained.
Drawing on his 28 years of parliamentary experience, he added that he will also oversee parliamentary affairs and help strengthen the relationship between Dr. Bawumia’s office and the party’s parliamentary caucus.
On the issue of party unity, Dr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu described cohesion within the NPP as a major priority. He contrasted the NPP’s structure with that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the NDC operates under a stronger centralized command structure, while the NPP’s more liberal and democratic culture can make coordination difficult if not properly managed.
He praised former NPP leaders such as Da Rocha, Peter Ala Adjetey, and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey for providing strong leadership that helped shape and strengthen the party from its United Party (UP) roots to its current form.
According to him, the NPP possesses a unique advantage because many of its experienced leaders, including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, remain active and available to contribute to the party’s growth. He indicated that efforts would be made to bring these experienced figures together to support the rebuilding and strengthening of the party.
Dr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also cautioned party members against becoming complacent over political predictions. Commenting on forecasts by political analyst Professor Agyeman-Duah and other observers, he noted that predictions are only guides and not guarantees of electoral success.
“Predictions should inspire hard work, not complacency. The party must continue to work diligently if it wants to achieve its objectives,” he stressed.
The interview highlighted Dr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s vision for an efficient office structure around Dr. Bawumia, a stronger and more united NPP, and a strategy that leverages the experience of the party’s senior statesmen as preparations begin for the 2028 political contest.
