Cedi comes under renewed pressure, loses 185% against dollar

The Ghana cedi came under renewed pressure over the past fortnight, partially reversing its 4.87% gain in August 2026 and taking its year-to-date depreciation against the US dollar to 8.77%.
In the interbank market, the cedi weakened 1.85% against the dollar to GH¢11.46, according to Databank Research. It also lost ground against the pound sterling and euro, depreciating by 1.75% to GH¢15.50 and 2.04% to GH¢13.31, respectively.
Movements in the retail foreign-exchange market were comparatively subdued. The dollar closed at GH¢11.90, representing a 0.42% increase, while the pound eased 0.16% to GH¢15.93. The euro remained unchanged at GH¢13.68.
Databank Research attributed the cedi’s renewed weakness largely to movements recorded in the first week of the fortnight, noting that about 70% of the depreciation occurred during that period.
The research house consequently believes the latest weakness was largely front-loaded, suggesting that the pace of depreciation moderated during the second week.
The latest performance highlights continued volatility in the local currency despite its strong appreciation in August, when the cedi gained 4.87% against the US dollar.
For businesses and investors with foreign-currency exposure, the renewed depreciation could increase the local-currency cost of imports and foreign-denominated obligations, while adding to currency-related uncertainty in the market.
