Cody Gakpo chooses Manchester City as Liverpool Transfer Talks Advance

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has decided to join Manchester City, with negotiations between the two Premier League clubs now underway ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

According to reports from The Athletic, the 27-year-old Netherlands international has informed Liverpool of his desire to move to the Etihad Stadium, choosing Manchester City over interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Gakpo has already agreed personal terms with City, leaving the two clubs to negotiate the transfer fee.

Gakpo started Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and provided an assist, but his future at Anfield has now become the subject of intense speculation.

Manchester City’s interest in the forward was first reported on August 24 as Pep Guardiola’s side moved to reinforce their attacking options following the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham.

Liverpool are understood to be open to selling Gakpo, but only if they can secure at least two attacking replacements before sanctioning his departure.

The Reds have already completed a deal for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola worth £106 million plus £17 million in add-ons, taking the potential package to £123 million. Liverpool also saw a £60 million bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh rejected earlier this week.

Speaking after the Nottingham Forest game, manager Andoni Iraola was asked about Gakpo’s future and said: “I cannot guarantee anything.”

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022 for an initial £37 million, with the deal potentially rising to £44 million.

Since arriving at Anfield, he has made 180 appearances, scoring 50 goals and providing 23 assists. He was part of Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign in 2024/25, scoring 18 goals in 49 appearances.

The Dutch forward signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool in August 2025.

Gakpo also featured prominently for the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring three goals before the Dutch were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the last 16.

Liverpool are reportedly seeking more than £65 million for the 27-year-old, while Manchester City have also agreed a €40 million deal for Palmeiras winger Allan Elias as they continue to reshape their attack.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, negotiations between Liverpool and Manchester City are expected to intensify as both clubs attempt to reach an agreement before Monday.
