The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has defended its decision to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, insisting that results must take precedence over attractive football.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the Portuguese coach’s pragmatic approach should not be judged solely on style, arguing that victories and trophies are ultimately what matter most in football.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum said supporters and football stakeholders are more likely to remember a team’s results than how it played.

“People will remember you for your last result and not your style, so for me, getting results is more important than playing stylish football,” he said.

The GFA has confirmed that the 73-year-old Queiroz will remain in charge as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Asante Twum stressed that winning matches should remain the primary objective, even if it requires the team to adopt a more defensive or cautious approach.

“If you play attractive attacking football and you lose 5-0, and you play a defensive, boring style but win 1-0, take your three points and win a trophy, which is better?” he asked.

“The results are always important.”

Queiroz took over the Black Stars after Otto Addo was dismissed following a difficult run of results, with the Portuguese tasked with guiding Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

At the tournament, Ghana finished third in their group before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

Despite criticism of the team’s playing style, the GFA has opted for continuity, with Queiroz now tasked with leading Ghana’s qualification campaign for the 2027 AFCON.

The decision comes after the Black Stars missed out on the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, placing additional pressure on the team to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament.

Ghana will begin their qualifying campaign away against Ivory Coast at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

While Queiroz’s pragmatic approach has divided opinion among Ghanaian football fans, the GFA believes his experience and the results achieved under his leadership at the World Cup provide sufficient justification for retaining him.

For the Black Stars, the focus now shifts to delivering results on the pitch — starting with the crucial AFCON qualifying campaign.
