Ghana could be Self Sufficient in Tomato Production by July 2027-Hon Bright Edward Kodzo Demordzi

Ghana is targeting the cultivation of about 18,000 acres of tomatoes as part of efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in tomato production.

The National Coordinator of Feed Ghana, Hon. Bright Edward Kodzo Demordzi, disclosed this in an interview, explaining that tomato production is highly dependent on climate, with excessive temperatures capable of causing flower abortion and significantly reducing yields.

He said areas with relatively favourable temperatures have been identified for tomato cultivation, including *Navrongo, Golo, Sege in Ada, Kansonya, Binduri, Dormaa West, Dormaa East, Wogye and Vanee*, as well as some high-altitude areas.

According to him, *tomato transplanting is expected to begin in October 2026, with more than **2,000 hectares* initially earmarked for cultivation.

The programme will involve *three private companies*, with the broader objective of expanding production and ensuring a more reliable supply of tomatoes throughout the year.

Hon. Demordzi added that greenhouse technology and climate control could further support year-round production by reducing the impact of adverse weather conditions on tomato cultivation.
