Ghana Football Must Rebuild Its Foundation — Sports Minister Kofi Adams Tells GFA Congress

Sports Minister Kofi Adams has urged the Ghana Football Association to overhaul the country’s football development system, starting from the grassroots.

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has called for a comprehensive rebuilding of Ghana football, insisting that the country must establish a clear and structured pathway for developing talent from the grassroots to the elite level.

Speaking at the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Ghana Football Association Congress in Prestea in the Western Region, the Minister said Ghana’s football resurgence must begin with a strong foundation built around long-term player development.

“Ghana football therefore needs to rebuild its foundation through a clear pathway of participation, identification, development, progression, elite transition and professionalism,” Adams said.

He stressed that every stage of the football development process must operate according to clearly defined standards and systems if Ghana is to regain its competitiveness on the international stage.

According to the Minister, standards, data, qualified personnel and accountability must form the backbone of Ghana’s football development structure.

“Every stage must have standards, data and qualified people and of course key amongst it, accountability,” he added.

Adams’ comments come amid increasing calls for reforms within Ghana football, particularly in the areas of grassroots development, youth football and the transition of promising players into the professional game.

The Minister maintained that developing talented youngsters alone would not be enough, arguing that Ghana needs a coordinated system capable of identifying, nurturing and progressively developing players throughout their careers.

He also assured the Ghana Football Association of the government’s willingness to support efforts aimed at creating a sustainable future for the sport.

However, he emphasised that government support must be matched by effective systems, transparency and accountability within football administration.

The GFA Congress brings together stakeholders from across the Ghanaian football ecosystem, including representatives of Premier League, Division One and Women’s Premier League clubs, alongside other members of the Association.

Adams’ calls for a renewed foundation now places grassroots development and institutional reform firmly among the key issues confronting Ghana football as stakeholders look to build a more sustainable pathway for the next generation.
