GSE Equities Market Surges 73% as Trading Activity Doubles

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) equities market has recorded a strong 73% year-to-date gain, buoyed by increased investor participation and a sharp rise in trading activity on the local capital market.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah, said the equities index had closed 73% higher as of August 18, 2026, placing the Ghanaian market among the strongest-performing equity markets globally over the period.

Ms. Amoah attributed the performance to renewed investor interest and increased activity across the domestic capital market, describing the gains as a positive signal for the continued development of Ghana’s securities market.

She made the remarks at the launch of the updated GSE ESG Manual, where she highlighted recent developments in the market and the growing importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations to investment decisions.

According to her, trading activity on the equities market has also doubled compared with the same period last year, pointing to a significant improvement in market participation.

The combination of stronger share-price performance and higher trading volumes suggests renewed confidence among investors and increased appetite for Ghanaian equities.

The performance comes as the GSE continues efforts to deepen the local capital market and attract greater participation from both domestic and international investors.

The updated ESG Manual launched by the Exchange is expected to further strengthen the market’s alignment with responsible investment principles by providing guidance on the integration of environmental, social and governance considerations into investment and corporate practices.

Ms. Amoah said the developments were part of a broader effort to position the Ghanaian capital market to respond to changing investor expectations and global market trends.

The strong equities performance also offers a boost to listed companies and investors following a period in which economic and market conditions had weighed on sentiment.

For investors, a 73% year-to-date gain represents a significant turnaround and reinforces the potential of the local equities market as an avenue for capital growth.

The doubling of trading activity, meanwhile, indicates that the gains have been accompanied by greater market engagement rather than being driven solely by isolated price movements.

Market participants will now be watching whether the positive momentum can be sustained through the remainder of 2026, particularly as the GSE continues to promote stronger corporate governance, responsible investment and broader participation.

The latest figures underscore the growing role of the Ghana Stock Exchange in mobilising capital and providing investment opportunities, while the renewed market activity could strengthen confidence in Ghana’s domestic capital market.
