“Joining Durban City Was an Easy Decision” — Eric Tinkler Opens Up After Kotoko Exit

Former Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has described his move to Durban City FC as an “easy decision” after being unveiled as the new manager of the South African Betway Premiership side, just 10 days after leaving the Ghanaian giants.

The 56-year-old was officially presented by Durban City on Thursday, October 8, 2026, following his departure from Kotoko on September 28, bringing a brief and eventful spell in Ghana to an end.

Tinkler joined the Porcupine Warriors on July 17, 2026, after leaving Sekhukhune United, but spent only two months in charge of the Kumasi-based club before returning to South Africa.

Speaking during his unveiling, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder pointed to Durban City's ambition, rapid progress and involvement in continental football as major factors behind his decision to take the job.

“I'm excited to be part of what is being built here at Durban City FC. The club is very ambitious, they have made positive strides in a short space of time, competing in the CAF Confederation Cup already, and that made my decision easy,” Tinkler said.

Relationship With Chairman Influenced Decision

Tinkler also revealed that his existing relationship with Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia played an important role in his decision to return to the club.

The pair previously worked together at Maritzburg United, which is now known as Durban City, during a period when Tinkler helped the team reach the 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup final.

The familiarity between the coach and the club's leadership made the opportunity particularly attractive when it arose.

“The chairman is someone I've worked with before. When the opportunity presented itself to come back, I grabbed it with both hands,” he added.

His appointment signals a return to familiar surroundings for the experienced South African tactician, who has managed several prominent clubs in the country.

Tinkler's Short Spell at Asante Kotoko

Tinkler's departure from Kotoko comes after a relatively brief spell in charge of one of Ghana's most successful football clubs.

During his time in Kumasi, he oversaw four Ghana Premier League matches, recording one victory, two draws and one defeat.

Despite the limited number of league fixtures, he secured silverware by guiding Kotoko to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup, where the Porcupine Warriors defeated arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties.

His exit on September 28 ended a tenure that had offered an early taste of success but ultimately proved short-lived.

Tinkler's return to South Africa gives him an immediate opportunity to resume his coaching career in a league where he has considerable experience.

Replaces Khalil Ben Youssef at Durban City

Tinkler takes over from Tunisian coach Khalil Ben Youssef, who departed after seven league matches.

Ben Youssef recorded one win, four draws and two defeats during his spell in the Betway Premiership, although he also guided Durban City into the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The change in leadership comes as Durban City seek greater consistency in domestic competition while maintaining their progress on the continental stage.

Tinkler's experience with South African clubs and his previous working relationship with the chairman are expected to be important as he begins his new assignment.

Top-Eight Finish and Cup Progress Among Targets

The new Durban City coach has outlined clear objectives for the remainder of the campaign.

His immediate priorities include securing a top-eight finish in the Betway Premiership and taking the club as far as possible in the CAF Confederation Cup, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup.

Achieving those targets would require improvements in league consistency while balancing the demands of domestic and continental competitions.

For Tinkler, the challenge is to build on the progress already made by Durban City and turn the club's ambition into results across multiple competitions.

KZN Derby to Mark Tinkler's First Test

Tinkler is scheduled to make his debut in charge of Durban City against AmaZulu in a KwaZulu-Natal derby on Tuesday, October 13, at Chatsworth Stadium.

The fixture will provide an immediate test for the new coach as he begins work with his squad and seeks to establish his preferred approach.

With league points and local pride at stake, the derby offers Tinkler an early opportunity to make an impression on Durban City's supporters.

His appointment also brings a swift end to the uncertainty surrounding his next move following his departure from Kotoko.

Having described the decision to join Durban City as an easy one, Tinkler will now be expected to deliver on the ambitions that attracted him back to the club, beginning with the derby against AmaZulu.
