Sammi Awuku Denies EOCO Arrest Claims, Appears in Kumasi

Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has dismissed reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Saturday, August 15.

The former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) described the reports as false, insisting that he was in the Eastern Region on Saturday for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) regional elections.

Mr Awuku made the clarification in a video shared on social media on Sunday, August 16, where he was seen in Kumasi in the company of popular NDC sympathiser, Appiah Stadium.

“Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi,” he said.

Reports circulating on social media had claimed that EOCO had detained the Akuapem North MP over alleged corruption and financial irregularities relating to his tenure at the NLA.

The alleged detention was said to be connected to ongoing investigations into financial transactions and other dealings at the Authority.

However, Mr Awuku’s appearance in Kumasi and his direct denial have cast doubt on the reports of his alleged arrest.

The Akuapem North MP has therefore challenged those behind the reports to reconcile the claims of his alleged detention with his activities in the Eastern Region on Saturday and his presence in Kumasi on Sunday.

As of the time of publication, there has been no confirmation from EOCO publicly establishing that Mr Awuku was arrested or detained on Saturday.
