A six-month ordeal at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital has ended for Emmanuel Etroo after Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stepped in to settle his medical bills and support his next surgery.

Emmanuel, a rubber tapper, was involved in a motorbike accident on February 15, 2026, when a Sprinter bus crashed into him on the Takoradi-Agona road at Ewusiejoe. The accident left his right foot badly injured.

He subsequently underwent four surgeries, incurring a total medical bill of GH¢39,110.

Although the driver initially promised to pay the medical expenses, he contributed only GH¢5,000 towards the first surgery, leaving Emmanuel's family to shoulder the rest.

After his fourth surgery, doctors recommended a fifth procedure. However, with the family unable to settle the outstanding bill or finance the next surgery, Emmanuel remained at the hospital for six months.

His situation gained public attention after Linda Otto, a nursing officer at the hospital, recorded a video appealing for support.

The video went viral on social media and caught the attention of the Western Regional Minister.

Mr. Nelson visited Emmanuel at the hospital and paid the full outstanding bill of GH¢39,110.

He also pledged to cover the cost of the fifth surgery and gave Emmanuel an additional GH¢5,000 to support his recovery after leaving the hospital.

The Minister also donated an undisclosed amount to male patients at the hospital's orthopaedic ward to help ease their medical expenses.

Alfred Acquah Asiedu, Shift-in-Charge of the Male Surgical Ward, expressed appreciation to the Minister for coming to the aid of Emmanuel and other patients.

For Emmanuel, the intervention brings an end to months of uncertainty and gives him renewed hope of completing his treatment and returning home.
