Transport Fares go up by 20%

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 20% increase in transport fares across the Western Region, citing rising operating costs and the need to sustain commercial transport services.
The adjustment is expected to affect passengers using taxis and commercial buses on various routes in the region. According to the union, the increase has become necessary due to higher fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, spare parts and other operational expenses.
The fare increase, however, is likely to place additional pressure on commuters, particularly low-income households and workers who depend heavily on public transport.
From a technical perspective, fare adjustments should be based on transparent cost analysis, including fuel consumption, vehicle maintenance, depreciation, insurance and prevailing economic conditions. Transport operators and regulators should also ensure that the new fares are clearly communicated and consistently applied to prevent arbitrary charges.
While the increase may help operators remain financially viable, stakeholders should consider measures to cushion vulnerable commuters and improve efficiency within the public transport system.
Actual fares for the various routes will be published tommorow.
