Residents of Nyanokrom Demand Immediate Action over deplorable road
Residents of Nyanokrom in the Shama District are calling on authorities to urgently rehabilitate their deteriorating road after staging a peaceful demonstration on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
The issue was discussed on Kyzz FM's Morning Show on Friday, July 31, 2026, hosted by Kwame Baah, where Aseda, a concerned resident, and the Assembly Member for Nyanokrom shared differing accounts regarding the state of the road and efforts being made to address the problem.
According to Aseda, residents first protested over the poor condition of the road in April , after years of neglect. He said the road has become almost impassable, making it difficult for commercial drivers, taxi operators, tricycle riders and other motorists to use it.
He explained that the poor road has forced transport operators to increase fares because of the damage caused to their vehicles, while school children, workers and other residents continue to struggle to commute daily.
He said, the youth and other residents eventually organised a communal labour exercise to fill portions of the road themselves because they could no longer wait for government intervention.
He further alleged that companies operating within the community contributed funds to support the rehabilitation of the road According to him, about GH¢30,000 was raised and was allegedly used to purchase fuel for the drip machine . However, he claimed that despite the expenditure, no work was carried out on the road, leaving residents disappointed and frustrated.
Responding on the programme, the Assembly Member for Nyanokrom,Hon. Issah Abubakr acknowledged that the road is in a deplorable condition and agreed that residents have genuine concerns.
He, however, gave a different account of the funds raised for the project. According to him, information provided by the Assembly indicated that the total amount raised was GH¢60,000, with only three out of seven companies fulfilling their pledge to contribute.
He explained that, based on the information available to him, part of the money was used to purchase fuel for the drip machine while the remaining amount was spent on materials required for the road works.
Touching on the status of the project, the Assembly Member said the contractor is currently working on drainage construction. However, he disclosed that he does not know the name of the company executing the road project.
According to him, whenever he makes inquiries about the contractor, he is not given a direct answer. He said the only explanation he has received is that the project is being undertaken as a Feeder Roads (FIDA Roads) project.
The Assembly Member appealed to residents to remain calm while engagements continue with the relevant authorities to ensure the road is completed.
The Nyanokrom road remains a vital route for residents, businesses and heavy-duty vehicles operating in the area. Residents are therefore calling on the appropriate authorities to speed up work to restore the road and ease the hardship faced by commuters and motorists.
